The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is the most glaciated part of the Alps. Here we find Europe’s longest glacier and a whole range of classic glacial features such as U-shaped valleys, glacial basins, horn peaks and moraines.
The area provides an outstanding geological record of the immense uplift and compression which formed the Alps many millions of years ago. | The diversity of flora and fauna is illustrated in the many forms of life found in the Alpine and sub-Alpine regions.
Plant colonization since the retreat of the glaciers provides an excellent example of plant sucession The impressive views of the north walls of the high Alps, centred on the majestic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, continue to play an important role in European culture.
